The tasks of genealogy
genealogy
Genealogy in the narrower sense describes the historical science of family history research, colloquially family research or genealogy. Genealogists or genealogists deal with human relationships and their representation. Usually, the listing of their ancestors known by name is understood as the genealogy of a person or family.
Baptism, marriage and death books
As a rule, the earliest registers are available from around 1600, in some areas only from around 1700 or 1750. During the Thirty Years' War, many clerical records were destroyed. Some documents are not available or the trail is lost due to emigration, change of location, wars or disasters such as fires.
Pedigree (ancestor table)
The pedigree lists all direct ancestors (2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great-grandparents, etc.). The trunk of the tree represents the initial person, the so-called crown, which is the oldest generation of ancestors that could be determined.
Family tree (descendant table)
The family tree is based on a progenitor and shows all children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, etc. The top of the tree, the so-called crown, is currently the youngest generation.
